TOC Americas Embraces Recovery

Edition of October 05, 2009

As glimmers of recovery start to show in a number of key global economies, the prognosis for maritime trade, liner shipping and ports in 2010-2012 will take centre stage at this year’s TOC Americas conference and exhibition. Staged for the first time ever in Argentina, the ninth TOC Americas event takes place from 9-11 November at the Sheraton Buenos Aires Hotel and Convention Centre.

The Port of Buenos Aires is Argentina's cultural, industrial, commercial, and financial centre and is one of South America's largest ports. Its terminals, which handle a throughput of around 1.8 million TEU, are run by global players Hutchinson, APM Terminals, PSA Group and DP World, with ICTSI currently building a new terminal that is planned to open in 2011. The port's river connections to Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay make it a distribution hub for much of the South American continent, making it an ideal strategic location to host TOC America 2009.

Under the theme ‘Surviving 2009: Understanding the Legacy of the Great Recession’ the three-day conference will provide delegates with a status report on global economic and maritime trade, with detailed insight into the outlook for the Americas, and the Latin and Caribbean maritime and port markets in particular.

When growth returns, where, and at what level, will all have critical bearing on investment, development and operations strategies for regional port and maritime logistics infrastructure. Key business panels at TOC Americas will provide delegates with the latest market intelligence, covering macro economic and trade indicators; deployment strategies for liner shipping on north-south and east-west Americas trades, including the effect of Panama Canal expansion; the state of the market in port infrastructure finance; and the impact of recent events on marine terminal operators’ appetite for investment and development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

This year’s conference will include a session devoted to ‘The Evolution of Regional Shipping Networks’ which will feature senior regional shipping executives, including Julian Thomas, East Coast Regional Director for Hamburg Süd, Enrique Arteaga, Regional Director ECSA for Chilean carrier CSAV and Marcos Hansen, Commercial Manager for Maersk Argentina, who is also a board member of Centro de Navegación, the influential Argentine shipping and maritime trade organisation. On day one of the conference, the speakers will discuss global and regional factors driving liner shipping strategies and vessel deployments in the Americas trades and the impact on providers of port and landside transport infrastructure.

During day two of TOC Americas, a panel of regional marine terminal executives will give its take on investment and development priorities for existing facilities, expansion projects and greenfield developments. The Latin economies have weathered the economic downturn better than most, according to latest World Bank reports, and there is a clear need for investment in new and upgraded terminal capacity to meet the region’s current and future trade volumes. While the global container terminal industry is clearly adopting a more cautious line on major project commitments, there are some significant expansion and greenfield projects in the Latin American pipeline, including Embraport in Brazil, Tecplata in Argentina and Contecar in Colombia, among others.

Speakers including Roberto Negro, CEO of ITL Exolgan in Argentina, Giovanni Benedetti, Commercial Manager at Sociedad Portuaria Regional de Cartagena (SPRC) of Colombia, Osvaldo Robles, Project Development Manager at SSA Latin America, and Chile’s Ultramar Group will look at the regional terminal demand and supply forecast and discuss how, and if, the economic crisis has changed the approach to evaluating commercial risks and returns.

As usual, the conference will also focus on practical operational issues for marine terminals and ports, including the challenging issues of managing current and future security requirements and how to improve the flow of data to expedite cargo shipments through the terminal and port. The role of automation in container handling and latest operational benchmarks are also on the agenda.

A brand new feature at TOC Americas 2009 is Innovation Day, taking place on Wednesday, 11 November. Open to delegates, exhibitors and visitors alike, this full day of presentations will provide the latest insight into the development and application of terminal technology and handling equipment, covering advances in terminal operating systems, process automation, equipment productivity and automation and how to reduce the environmental impact of container handling operations. Terminal operators and technology providers will review key developments in marine terminal IT and hardware, and offer advice on how to plan and evaluate technology investment to ensure best returns.

What’s more. as part of Innovation Day delegates will be able to network with industry experts during lunch. Leading figures in the industry will be on hand to answer questions on a range of specific technology topics. Table signs will be marked with topics of interest, giving delegates the chance to interact with experts and industry colleagues to discuss innovative technology and equipment.

Running alongside the conference, the TOC Americas exhibition features leading international suppliers of terminal technology and equipment, major consultants to the port industry and key regional terminal providers. Companies on hand to showcase their new innovations and services to visitors and delegates include: APS Technology, Gottwald Port Technology, Liebherr, Moffatt & Nicholl and many more.

Networking opportunities at TOC Events extend well beyond the formal conference and exhibition. This year’s event features ‘Tango at TOC’, the official networking reception, dinner and tango show on the evening of Tuesday, 10 November. Sponsored by Halcrow Group, the evening will allow exhibitors, delegates, speakers, VIPs and visitors to mingle and discuss ideas and opportunities whilst enjoying a memorable tango experience against the 1940s style backdrop of the Esquina Carlos General.

“Times have undoubtedly been tough in the shipping industry over the last 12 months and terminal operators have increasingly looked towards making their businesses as efficient as possible,” comments Paul Holloway, Event Director of TOC Events Worldwide.

“The truth is, we live in a world where it is not easy to increase the price of services, so looking for new products and services that will improve productivity and lower operating costs, whilst maintaining good operational standards, is key. Attending a high quality exhibition offers terminal operators the opportunity to source technology that will impact on their productivity and ultimately reduce operating cost.”
