June 06, 2021 Maersk reefer train in Chile: one step closer to decarbonizing the supply chain Railroad marks a 70% reduction of CO2 emissions

Maersk’s transformation from shipping line to integrated logistics operator has taken a new step with the launch of the refrigerated train that goes from the O’Higgins region to San Antonio, transporting cold chain cargo. MundoMaritimo talked in exclusive with Francisco Ulloa, Managing Director Area West Coast of South America at Maersk, to learn more in detail how the train works, and future endeavors related to rail transport cargo.

Where the business is

“This initiative comes from moving closer to the south and being near where the fruit and fresh goods are, such as canned foods, wood, etc., all these large companies in Chile are looking for more efficient transport. I believe that this is just the beginning and I hope that technology will allow us in the future to have electric trucks and an electric last mile, because clients are asking for these services,” says Ulloa, at the same time he adds that the train manages to achieve an important efficiency by reducing transit times and the intermediaries involved, as it has a strategic location closer to the packing and processing centers for fresh products (mainly fruits and vegetables) and transports them directly to the stacking yard, saving time at the port entrance which is usually delayed by truck bottlenecks.

Just as the train makes it way to the port with fresh reefer cargo, it makes the return trip to Teno, Maule region, with containers full of dry cargo -mainly raw materials imports, - completing a sustainable transport circle which started in mid-April and already has two weekly trips to the port and looking to implement a third weekly frequency.

The first of many

Maersk always stands out for making their projects grow and replicating their good experiences. That’s why the reefer train initiative could be repeated in other areas of the country with fresh goods productive industry with cargo that requires cold chain. “For the moment we are looking at the salmon industry, as we believe that there is potential there for a railroad to San Vicente or San Antonio, but there’s nothing we could develop on yet. We are looking at what clients are needing and seeing how we can provide solutions,” the executive comments.

Another future project would be the use of electric trucks, as a step closer to decarbonizing Maersk’s logistics towards 2050. “It would be interesting to see just how feasible it is to have electric ground transport,” says Ulloa, who adds that “as a world-class company who has a high level decarbonization agenda we have to generate creative alternatives to help society. This may seem like a cliché phrase, but it is actually a very serious goal we are working towards and we will continue to look for carbon neutral alternatives to offer to our clients.”

It is these ‘creative’ solutions, such as the reefer train, that have positive effects among clients. “What clients appreciate the most about this service is the geographical closeness between their warehouses and distribution centers with the train, along with the direct access to the stacking yard. This solution is not only sustainable in terms of decarbonization, but it is also efficient in reducing interactions in transporting cargo,” he highlights.

“We are helping our clients to reduce their carbon footprint, and also we are helping society by delivering a solution from beginning to end,” he points out. “There’s something interesting happening that’s not just related to sustainability: logistics hast taken on a more relevant role in the last years. Maybe it as the likes of Amazon that opened society’s eyes to the easiness of a digital world, and I believe that logistics has gained a more important role lately than how it was years before. In the maritime area, quality of service is sometimes compromised as cargo doesn’t always reach destinations on time, and that is because there’s still a lack of digitalization and I believe that logistics is going through an important process that involves increase of digitalization. As digitalization penetrates, logistics will have a greater business impact.”

Decarbonization mentality

In line with Maersk’s goal to reach zero carbon emissions by 2050, the company is permanently looking to deliver sustainable alternatives to help their clients achieve their own logistics decarbonization goals. “Clients are putting on the table how to work with supply chain partners that can help them reduce carbon emissions. We started to look into how to deliver this type of solution and that’s where the train idea kicked in,” Ulloa says.

Since the railroad and the trains already existed, it was only a matter of a reefer train. Although it is not an electric train -which is a next step to look forward to- this does achieve an important reduction of the carbon footprint thanks to the logistic efficiency of transporting 31 containers at once. “There’s roughly 70% less CO2 emissions from the train compared to ground transportation, an efficiency generated by the large volume transported in each trip: 31 containers; which automatically takes out of circulation 31 trucks and their respective CO2 emissions,” adds the West Coast executive.
