Bad weather causes cargo ship runs aground in Valparaíso Port

The Port of Valparaíso were closed for all types of activities due to the storm
Edition of July 06, 2010

A ship crashed into the highway in the port of Valparaíso, due to rains and winds accompanied bad weather in the region last tuesday (June 6th).  Winds gusts have reached more than 60 kilometers per hour in the area.

Navy personnel, along with the maritime authority, the port captain, the maritime governor and firemen, have been working on site since approximately 4:00 pm today. The wind and rain, which started pouring Monday night, produced massive waves that hit the coastal area hard. This resulted in the cargo ship Cerro Alegre to end up embedded in Avenida Errázuriz, right before the Francia metro entrance.

Bad weather has also caused power outages in some sectors like Valparaíso, Quilpué, and Viña del Mar, due to trees falling on power lines. Three lanes on Avenida España, the main street connecting Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, were blocked for some time due to a fallen post.  No people or cars were damaged although detours and traffic cuts had to be made in order to remove the post.

The Port of Valparaíso remains closed for all types of activities due to the storm.  Likewise, the road connecting Chile with Argentina, camino internacional, is also closed due to snow and sleet from the Argentine side.
